This walk through rolling countryside takes in sections of the Writer’s Way, a 17-mile route that links the nearby town of Alton to surrounding villages, so named because it incorporates places linked to a couple of famous authors. Our walk begins in the historic village of Chawton, home to Jane Austen’s House just across the road from our meeting point. We’ll work our way east and then south through open fields and woodland, eventually stopping for lunch by Oakhanger Stream, just east of Selborne, birthplace and home to the 18th century naturalist Gilbert White. We’ll then climb the zig-zag path and wind our way back to Chawton via the villages of Newton Valence and Farringdon. Post-walk drink in the Greyfriar’s pub. Please bring a packed lunch and appropriate clothing/footwear for the terrain and weather.
: Chawton Car Park, Winchester Road, Alton, GU34 1SD. Free parking (please make sure you’re in this car park and not the adjacent Greyfriar’s pub car park). Additional parking on Winchester Road (the main road through the village).
